Vintage Circus - The Art of  CYRK  Posters

As our name may suggest, we get a real kick out of all thing’s vintage circus. Our favorite being circus posters stemming from Poland in the 60s & 70s. Created to announce the imminent arrival of the circus in town we think they’re utterly incredible and love the vibrant colours, sense of individual personality, humour, and fantasy.

After WWII building sites throughout Poland were enclosed with wooden fences which quickly became covered with posters and served as substitutes for the absence of museums and galleries. Posters became the art of the street and a golden era of the Polish School of Posters was established.

Contemporary  CYRK  posters were first created in the 60s, when the state circus agency commissioned some of the nation’s leading artists to develop a modern approach to the circus poster - a new kind of circus poster to help upgrade its image. They didn’t want adverts depicting concrete objects, people, or facts. Instead, they wanted artistic renderings reminding the public that an exciting and modern circus was coming to town.

CYRK  posters have long been recognized and collected as a unique art form. They are exhibited and sold as art all over the world in poster galleries and auction houses and form part of many museums and private collections. We want one!!!

Below are some of our favourite poster designers. We defy you not to smile and then to not want one too!
